A slate carving of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of the modern state of Bhutan. A political and religious refugee from Tibet, he fled to Bhutan in the early 17th century and is largely responsible for building most of the monastery fortresses or dzongs throughout the kingdom.
